By Why is it so important that we read to our children?
1. It predicts the ease with which they will learn to read and write. The knowledge a child has in relation to books and the stories in them when they start school, determines their school success.
When we expose them to books from a young age (6 weeks old or even earlier) we will be proving them with the space to discover on their own how to handle a book, what it is, the objective, how we turn the pages, they will understand the logic and order of how we read and their eyes will get used to the sequence. They will learn about the directionality with which we read. It is during those years of reading with them that they will become familiar with books.
They will learn to distinguish between letters and images, and the relationship between them.
2. It is a perfect space to develop an emotional bond with our children. Since it is a time when we sit down to do an activity together, from start to finish. It also promotes positive discussions, when we ask them about the characters or they start asking questions about certain topics, which creates the basis for the communication that we will have with them.

When is the best age?
From day one or at least from six weeks old and if for some reason they didn’t start before, don’t worry, today is a good day to start.
Tips:
- It is essential to put reading into a routine, whatever the time it is, but that we have the habit of always doing it at the same time
- It is very important to repeat the books until the time comes when they can tell it by themselves. Why? because they are deconstructing the book little by little and in each repetition, they will be able to absorb more abstract elements of the story, which will allow them to broaden their understanding of it
- Choose books according to their age and development
- Include little siblings and find a book in between so everyone feels involved
- Ask them questions about the stories, what they think, what they feel, what they would change
- Do not read to them when they are very tired or hungry
- Take them to the library or bookstore so they can choose the book they want
- Try not to read on their bed. Put some cushions on a corner to have your own reading space
- It is important that your kids also see you reading books
- Have books accessible to them, so that one day if they feel like it, they can go and get one at any time of the day

Cuando los exponemos a los libros desde chiquitos (6 semanas de nacidos o inclusive antes) les daremos el espacio para que ellos solos puedan ir descubriendo sobre el manejo de un libro, lo que es, el objetivo, cómo le damos vuelta a las páginas, entenderán la lógica y el orden de cómo leemos y sus ojos se acostumbrarán a la secuencia. Aprenderán sobre la direccionalidad con la que leemos. Es durante esos años de leer con ellos que podrán familiarizarse con el libro.
Aprenderán a distinguir entre las letras y los dibujos, la relación entre los mismos.
2. Es un espacio perfecto para desarrollar un vinculo emocional con nuestros hijos. Ya que es un tiempo en el que nos sentamos a hacer una actividad juntos, de principio a fin. Propicia el discurso, cuando preguntamos les sobre los personajes o ellos no empiezan a hacer más preguntas sobre ciertos temas lo que va creando las bases para la comunicación que tendremos con ellos.
3. Es una herramienta cognitiva muy fuerte, ya que les va a permitir comprender sobre el mundo en el que viven, sobre los cambios que van a vivir. Los libros son fantásticos para prepararlos sobre transiciones. Puedes encontrar recomendaciones para diferentes temas y edades en botón de abajo
¿Cuál es la mejor edad?
Desde el día uno que llegan a casa o al menos desde las seis semanas y si por algo no empezaron antes no se preocupen hoy es un buen día para empezar.
Tips:
- Esencial meter en rutina la lectura, a la hora que sea pero que tengamos el hábito de hacerlo siempre a la misma hora
- Es muy importante repetir los libros hasta que llegue el momento en el que ellos lo puedan contar. ¿Por qué? porque ellos van deconstruyendo el libro poco a poco y en cada repetición podrán absorben elementos más abstractos de la historia, lo que les permitirá ampliar su comprensión sobre el mismo
- Elege los libros de acuerdo a su edad y su desarrollo
- Incluye a los hermanitos y encontrar un libro intermedio para que todos se sientan involucrados
- Hazles preguntas sobre las historias, qué piensan ellos, qué sienten, qué cambiarían
- No les leas cuando ya estén muy cansados o con hambre
- Llévalos a la biblioteca o librería para que ellos elijan el libro que quiera
- Trata de no leerlos los libros en su cama. Pon unos cojines en el piso en una esquina y crear el rincón de lectura
- Es muy importante que tus hijos te vean a ti leyendo libros
- Que los tengan accesibles para que un día si así lo sienten puedan ir a obtenerlo en cualquier momento del día
